Little Jazz Heritage Orchestra (LJHO)—a 12-piece ensemble dedicated to exploring a distinctive and often overlooked niche of large-ensemble jazz, was recently introduced by the Jazz Heritage Orchestra (JHO). The LJHO spotlights repertoire by influential composers and arrangers such as Ernie Wilkins and Marty Paich, written specifically for this instrumentation. The ensemble also features original compositions and 12-part arrangements created by members of the JHO family, offering audiences a fresh yet historically grounded sound not found on any other bandstand today.

More on the Jazz Heritage Orchestra:

The Jazz Heritage Orchestra (JHO), founded in 1998 under the Cleveland State University Black Studies Department, is entering an exciting new chapter as it deepens its mission through a partnership with OpenTone Music and relocates its operational base to Akron, Ohio. Led by Artistic Director Dennis Bradley Reynolds, the JHO remains committed to preserving and perpetuating the heritage of great African American jazz masters through high-level performances and transformative educational programming.

From its new home, the JHO is expanding its community impact. The ensemble now travels to public and private schools across Northeast Ohio to present open rehearsals, master classes, jazz history lectures, and other interactive learning experiences. These initiatives are designed to inspire students, cultivate young musicians, and ensure that the tradition of jazz remains vibrant and accessible to future generations.

For more than two decades, the Jazz Heritage Orchestra has earned widespread acclaim and has performed with renowned artists including Clark Terry, Benny Golson, Nancy Wilson, John Morton, Evelyn Wright, and Vanessa Rubin, cementing its reputation as one of the Midwest’s premier large jazz ensembles.

Concert in partnership with Rubber City Jazz and Blues Festival and sponsored by Cascade Subaru.
