Opening reception for We the People, a fine art exhibition exploring street art and graffiti

We The People: a celebration of unauthorized art makingArt making is an innate human activity that all people should feel able to participate in. Art can and should exist outside of the academic and capitalistic realms of profit and what is deemed "real art"Street artists, often referred to as graffiti artists are some of those people defying ideas about what art is and where it belongs. The question of vandalism versus art is an internal struggle of street art, when a mural is sanction does it make it more worthy? How does race, class, immigration status, gender identity and sexuality play into what is considered art? This exhibition serves to highlight street artists as unauthorized voices of their communities and challenging what "art" is. This exhibition isn't an endorsement, but rather opening a dialogue about the continued struggle of graffiti as a medium.Artists are invited to submit 3 pieces that focus on a graffiti or street art making process. Photography of graffiti, items that have been embellished on in a graffiti style, works that have been made into stickers and wild posted, yarn bombs, wheat pastes, etc. If you are unsure if your work fits this exhibition reach out, or submit anyway! We are looking for work that challenges the typical cannon of fine art.A zine compilation featuring the works will be printed and distributed at the opening, 10 copies will be given to each artist to distribute as they desire. The zine will feature statements from the jurors and information about the history and meaning of graffiti art.
