History At Play™ invites guests to enjoy an intimate evening of delicious cocktails and delectable gossip. Venture to The Merchant (60 Franklin Street, Boston, MA), mere steps from old Ticknor & Fields Publishing House. Boston was hailed as "the hub of the universe," according to Oliver Wendell Holmes, and its notoriety came from Victorian literary successes. Ticknor & Fields was the greatest publishing house in the nation, if not the world, and its namesake-- Annie Fields-- knows every juicy detail about the lives of its transcendental writers.
Learn how famous writers were pricked by Cupid’s arrow, including: Nathaniel Hawthorne, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Harriet Beecher Stowe, and Charles Dickens. And while Annie Fields loves to gossip, you will learn her story too, including her Boston marriage to “sister-hostess” Sarah Orne Jewett in their "waterside museum" on Beacon Hill.
