UK VOTING SYSTEM: TIME TO CHANGE?

Join us in person for a lively discussion on the UK First past the post voting system. Is it fit for purpose in a modern democracy or do it's flaws render it obselete? Whether you are a novice on the workings of First past the post, a politics buff or just curious, come along for engaging talks, plenty of questions and hopefully some answers.

The keynote speaker is Patrick Hurley, MP for Southport. Patrick is a member of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Fair Elections, who want to replace First past the post with a proportional voting system where seats match votes. As a first step the APPG are pushing for a National Commission on Electoral Reform. Patrick is well placed to update us on the APPG’s progress.

Patrick will be joined by Rob Ford a national expert on political analysis. Rob is Professor of Political Science at Manchester University. He is a keen advocate for proportional representation (PR) based on his analysis of “electoral chaos” from First past the post, particularly under our multi-party system. Rob has also identified beneficial policy outcomes for PR over a range of measures.
