The Society for Care And Maintenance approaches care as a practiced, embodied, and conflicted act. The work began as a daily ritual of collecting shattered tempered glass from city streets after damage. Through acts of sorting, mapping, transferring, embedding, and restraint, SCAM reframes care as a form of labor that is both calming and controlling, visible yet unacknowledged.
Over the duration of the exhibition, SCAM will produce A Love Letter, thousands of glass fragments laid by hand in an ordered, reflective field. At this event, production will come to an end, and the piece will be ultimately swept away.
This exhibition is supported by the Graham Foundation for Advanced Studies in the Fine Arts.
