\nLife at the Jail was horrific, brutal and very isolating for the inmates who found themselves spending time here.\n
\nMany would, as a form of punishment, have to spend hours working the “crank machine” a repetitive task of lifting and dropping sand for no purpose other than for punishment.\n
\nOther inmates, time spent in the “dark room”, solitary confinement in a tiny chamber with only a small light source some 40 feet above.\n
\nBy 1888, the County Jail became the Military Detention Barracks for the Scottish Regiment, until decommissioned by the War Office in 1935.\n
\nDuring the mid-20th Century, the jail fell into disrepair until the 1990’s when restoration work was carried out on this derelict site.\n
