The Arts Stage Theatre presents the UK premiere of The Black Cloak, a bold Kazakh allegorical drama exploring love, loyalty, betrayal, and conscience. Written by acclaimed Ossetian playwright Georgy Khugaev and performed in Kazakh with English surtitles, the play uses the metaphor of a stylised animal world to reflect on very human dilemmas. Directed by Askhat Mayemirov, one of Kazakhstan’s leading theatre innovators, this visually poetic and psychologically layered production is a powerful introduction to contemporary Central Asian theatre. The event is produced by Shynargul Kabysheva, award-winning actress of stage and screen.
And after the interval, you will experience “Soul of the Steppe” — a vibrant journey into Kazakh culture. This 40-minute programme blends music, dance, and poetry, featuring traditional songs and compositions on the dombyra, expressive Kazakh dances, and a special reading by People’s Artist of Kazakhstan Lidiya Kadenova. Immerse yourself in the warmth, creativity, and spirit of the steppe in this captivating performance.
