SLY AND THE FAMILY DRONE - playing in the round

Sly & The Family Drone are a neo-jazz wrecking crew hailing from London. With roots in cassette collage and noise experimentation, Sly have grown into a multi-limbed sonic organism. Layering dense electronics, skronking saxophone, and feral percussion into a convulsive celebration of noise, rhythm, and resistance.

Originally formed by Matt Cargill as a cassette manipulation project, Sly have evolved into a full-force live ensemble, positioned somewhere between free jazz, noise, industrial and rave culture. Their music is improvised but never aimless, creating towering crescendos and warped textures that leave no two performances alike.

Their performances are legendary: visceral, anarchic, and deeply communal. Preferring to set up in the round, Sly erase the boundaries between band and audience, transforming passive observers into active contributors and collapsing performance into a shamanic ritual of catharsis.

Having shared stages (or floors) with the likes of Lightning Bolt, Wolf Eyes, Dälek & Swans, and festivals such as Supersonic (UK), Unsound (PL), Supernormal (UK), Milhões de Festa (PT), Incubate (NL), Desertfest (UK) - Sly continue to scorch their own path through the no audience underground at venues and festivals in the UK and beyond.

LANDS & BODY
In 2024 - over 20 years after making their debut as noise-rock duo That Fucking Tank, James Islip and Andy Abbott returned with new project Lands & Body. The gear remains the same - baritone guitar played through multiple amplifiers and drums.

The approach, however, has matured like a fine Cask Ale. Math-rock riffs have become interlocking fingerpicked patterns and rhythms, ear-bleeding noise has given way to spacious dynamics. Double-digit song lengths and twin-neck guitar appearances up the prog factor. The signature Tank groove and interplay underpins an expanded palette of influences drawn from post-rock, minimalist folk, free jazz and desert blues.

In a scene of reformations, legacy acts and ‘classic album replays’ James and Andy have decided to leave the past where it belongs and start afresh, the same but different and in the process carved out a new genre of dark mild-core.
