“Self directed play is one of the best ways to help a child unlock their passions, but this requires adults to take a step back and let them grow.” ~ Peter Gray
It is no secret that play is a fundamental activity needed for child development. Research has proven time and time again that free-play is necessary for learning how to navigate the world around us. Through play, children learn a plethora of skills such as negotiation, conflict-resolution, self-expression and more. Schools centered around self-directed education foster and nurture the experiences and learning that comes with play. Sometimes, conflict arises with play and that is okay. In order for children to reap all benefits from play, we must allow them to problem solve and come to their own conclusions in a safe space. As adults, we are there when they fall, we are there to listen and we are there to help. But in order for growth to happen, allowing children the time and space to work things out on their own lets them build their own coping skills and promotes independence within them. Let's make schools a safe place to fail and succeed. It's time to allow children to be autonomous, accountable and independent. Let's foster our children's growth through hands-on and real self-chosen activities.
About Sudbury Education
At Sunset Sudbury school, students are free to use their childhood years to satisfy their natural thirst for knowledge, to explore the world, and to learn how to actively communicate with honesty. Students’ time and choice of activities are valued and are managed without intervention or coercion by others. Curriculum is not prescribed and all students are responsible for their own day, choosing the subject matter, the place, and the time for their pursuits. Students also determine whether to work on their own, with a small group or in a structured class setting.
