This is a follow-up workshop to Tom Payne's performance of John Ruskin's Storm-Cloud, giving you a chance to contribute to the live brief

Impressions of the Matter: Workshop

Join artist Tom Payne for a short, practical workshop introducing the international live brief Impressions of the Matter. This is a creative call to respond to Storm-Cloud, a contemporary performance lecture that reimagines John Ruskin’s 1884 address The Storm-Cloud of the Nineteenth Century.

PLEASE NOTE: this workshop is particularly aimed at English, Acting and Performance students at Manchester Metropolitan University but it is open to all. This is a free event, sponsored by the Manchester Centre for Gothic Studies and the Long Nineteenth-Century Network.

In order to attend this workshop, it's recommended that you also book onto the free performance of Storm-Cloud which will take place earlier on the same afternoon, also in the Grosvenor Theatre. Please sign up via this link.

Through conversation and creative exercises, participants will explore fragments of the lecture and experiment with ways of responding - visually, textually, sonically, or performatively. The session offers an entry point into the wider Impressions of the Matter archive, where contributions from artists, students, and researchers worldwide are gathered as “footnotes” to the evolving artwork.

No prior experience is required - just curiosity, and a willingness to participate.
