You will gain hands on experience operating our 200 psi Babcock and Wilcox boilers and 2500 HP Triple Expansion Reciprocating Steam Engine on live steam while living aboard ship like the merchant mariners who manned her during her wartime career!

Topics include: Marine boilers, steam cycle, valve maintenance, auxiliary engines and pumps, cargo handling steam winches and the 2500 HP Triple Expansion Reciprocating Engine.

You will learn the duties of the engineering watch, as you light off the boilers, raise steam, start up the auxiliary equipment and operate the main engine. All training will be conducted with the ship moored to the pier.

All instructors are members of the SS JOHN W BROWN Engineering Department.

Steam school includes on board accommodations in original crew cabins Friday and Saturday night, secure parking on the pier, Continental Breakfast, Buffet Lunch and Dinners on board the ship. Optional stay aboard Sunday night (meals included) for $50 extra.

Included with the steam school package, you will also receive a one year membership in Project Liberty Ship and training manuals by e-mail in advance of the class.

The SS John W. Brown is a non-smoking, drug free environment. Accommodations are basic, and original vintage 1942. The ship is certified to operate by the US Coast Guard but contains original features from 1942 which do not meet modern safety standards including, but not limited to, unshielded moving parts. A safety briefing will start the course and participants will be advised in advance as to the proper clothing and safety equipment to bring with them. Minimum age for participants is 21. In the event that the minimum class size is not reached or due to unforeseen operational issues, the class will be cancelled and all money refunded
