Join us the opening of SPACES AND PLACES at the Ritz, featuring new work by Zora Neale Hurston Fellows Teresa Cook and Emily Mitchell!

NEW SPACES and PLACES Exhibit at The Ritz Theatre!

Join us for an opening reception for SPACES and PLACES, a new art exhibition featuring the latest works by Teresa Cook and Emily Mitchell, our two Zora Neale Hurston Fellows in Placemaking, Community-Building, and Literary Arts.

Since opening a smaller show last fall here at Women Writing for (a) Change, they've added new works exploring ideas of SPACE and PLACE. Teresa's work has focused on the story of Zora Neale Hurston in Jacksonville, and Emily's work features intimate portraits of her family's life and community connections here in Jacksonville.

Join us for a lovely evening at the historic Ritz Theatre!

PROGRAM

  • 6:00-6:30 p.m., welcoming, art viewing, light refreshments
  • 6:30 p.m. Introductions and opening by Jennifer Wolfe
  • 6:35-7:00 p.m. Artist talks by Emily Mitchell and Teresa Cook, plus Q&A
  • 7:00-8 p.m., Conversation, art, get the NEW Spaces and Places anthology featuring works by Teresa and Emily, and purchase art and journals

Thanks to The Cummer Family Foundation for the grant to support this work, and to Louise Freshman Brown for her advice and mentorship—not to mention The Ritz Theatre for the space and place to exhibit this work!

SPACES AND PLACES: An Overview

“The ache for home lives in all of us, the safe place where we can go as we are
and not be questioned.”—Maya Angelou

“You’re the place I call home. You’re the place I put down my roots.
You’re the place I know I belong.”—Louise Erdrich

What is SPACE and what is PLACE?

Human Geographer Yi-Fu Tuan suggests that "place is security and space is freedom; we are attached to the one and long for the other." Indeed. And being aware of all the possibilities that lie in that dimension is the first step toward both safety and freedom. Art is what gives us that window into that world.

Join us as we explore ideas like "sacred" space, “biased” space, mythical space and place, time in experiential space, or cultural attachments to space, so we can share a deeper awareness and appreciation when we come together to animate our world.

Your purchases will help our artists and writers directly, enabling us to fund future art exhibitions like this one, as well as our fellowships, scholarships, and other accessibility programs for women artists and writers, our college and high school interns, and diverse members of this community.
