
Every space has a unique acoustic, whether a bathroom, lobby or cathedral. Even carefully designed concert halls will have their own sonic signature, through differences in dimensions, materials and the objects within it – including the audience.
Alvin Lucier’s I Am Sitting in a Room (1969) aimed to highlight the interaction between a room’s natural resonances and the human voice. It’s a work than can be repeated in any space, with unique results each time.
