Talk on "Application‑Aware Data Policy Enforcement for VM‑Based Workloads" by Kanika Singhal, Senior Member of Technical Staff, R&D Flow team, Nutanix Technologies

Brief: Modern enterprise deployments still rely heavily on virtual machines for running storage‑adjacent and data‑intensive workloads, yet access control and data governance between such workloads is commonly limited to Layer‑3 and Layer‑4 mechanisms.

This talk presents a practical proof‑of‑concept that uses a Layer7 Proxy for policy enforcement point between virtual machines, enabling application‑aware control over data movement without modifying application or storage code. By inspecting protocol semantics such as TLS SNI, HTTP authority, and request paths, it enforces fine‑grained policies for storage endpoint access, data exfiltration prevention, and workload‑specific governance. The results demonstrate that Layer‑7 policy enforcement at the VM boundary provides stronger data security and observability guarantees than traditional network‑level controls, while remaining portable and reproducible across VM‑based environments.

Kanika Singhal, Senior Member of Technical Staff, R&D Flow team is a Technical leader in Flow network security at Nutanix. 15 years of industry experience in the network and security domain. Prior to Nutanix was working in VMWare in SDWAN team

Nilesh Joshi is a Sr. Technical Manager has been a core member of the Cloud-Native AOS team since the very beginning. He is currently leading the engineering efforts behind Nutanix’s cloud-native storage.
