Dive into the harmony of Bach and brainwaves with live tunes and mind-blowing science!

Science Meets Music: “Bach and Brain”

Speaker and Musical Guest: Dr. Moritz Helmstaedter, Director at the Max Planck Institute for Brain Research and pianist

This program combines insights into the brain’s neuronal networks with piano music by one of the greatest composers of all time, Johann Sebastian Bach (1685–1750). The lecture explores how the brain processes expectations—and how composers skillfully use those expectations to both satisfy and surprise their listeners. It also examines the neural networks involved in memory, which also allow us to recognize and recall our favorite pieces of music. The musical selections will include works from Bach’s Partita No. 1, the Goldberg Variations, and the English Suite No. 2.

Science Meets Music is free and open to the public. Advanced registration required. The series takes place at the Benjamin Upper School, 4875 Grandiflora Circle, Palm Beach Gardens, FL 33418. Doors open at 6 p.m. The program begins at 6:15 p.m.
