Sapphic Cinema and BFI Melodrama - Carol and Live Performance

In collaboration with the BFI's nationwide "Too Much: Melodrama on Film" season, Theatreship and Abi Asisa’s Sapphic Cinema presents a series of nights dedicated to getting swept away by the power of emotion on the big screen. Our season, "Never Too Much," champions the genre's unapologetic intensity, celebrating its enduring influence and emotional depth. 

This event is dedicated to highlighting FLINTA (femme, lesbian, intersex, nonbinary, trans, asexual) stories within queer cinema.

Carol (2015) is a modern classic of queer melodrama. In 1950s New York, a whirlwind of forbidden love and unspoken emotion is ignited when Therese, a young department store clerk and aspiring photographer, meets Carol, an elegant woman trapped in a failing marriage.   The film is a masterclass in subtlety and suppressed desire, beautifully capturing the risks and sacrifices of living an authentic life.
