The Doomsday Clock stands at 85 seconds to midnight as spending on arms is surging worldwide. SOPHIE BOLT looks for a different way forward.

The global threat of nuclear war has rarely been greater – while climate breakdown puts not just people but planet in jeopardy.

Our own country is part of the problem, spending hundreds of billions on nuclear weapons (in defiance of our obligations under international treaties) and allowing the United States to park some of its own nuclear arsenal on British soil for the first time in nearly 20 years.

But, even as these threats are growing, so is the opposition. Pressure is building on the Government to instead prioritise tackling poverty and repairing our crumbling public infrastructure and services. Over 55 per cent of the public have supported calls for US bases to be closed if Trump attacks Greenland. Even more oppose US nukes being deployed in Britain.

Join this critical meeting to discuss all this and more.

This talk is sponsored by Bath & District UNA, Bath Stop War and Rethinking Security B&NES.

Sophie Bolt is general secretary of the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament. She has more than 30 years’ campaigning experience and has been part of CND’s leadership for more than two decades.
