Renaissance One presents Colonial Countryside with Corinne Fowler and Peter Kalu, chaired by Melanie Abrahams, sponsored by the Centre for Place Writing and the Centre for Migration and Postcolonial Studies
In 2020, author and academic Corinne Fowler co-authored a report investigating the colonial histories of National Trust properties following the initiation of a groundbreaking creative project bringing together 10 and 11 year old children, professional authors, historians and critics to examine the impact and reverberations of UK country houses with significant and reverberating colonial histories. The resulting book, Colonial Countryside, co-edited by Fowler and Jeremy Poynting of Peepal Tree Press (2024), is an anthology of personal and critical responses including creative writing by global majority writers and essays by leading historians and artists.
This event offers readings and perspectives from the book and an audience Q&A that brings together Corinne Fowler with Peter Kalu, one of the 10 featured writers, chaired by the wider project's Associate Producer, Melanie Abrahams.
The event will be preceded by a soft drink reception at 5pm, and followed by a book signing with the authors. The event will then begin at 5:30pm.
