Who is it for?
All staff working in mainstream education settings. This event is not suitable for those working in special education settings.

Why attend?
This course is designed to equip staff with the skills and confidence to minimise or avoid physical intervention wherever possible. Where intervention becomes unavoidable, staff will understand the legal and professional justification for their actions. Attending will also support your setting’s compliance with safeguarding and health and safety standards.

What does it cover?
Grounded in current DfE guidance (Use of Reasonable Force and Restrictive Interventions in Schools), the training emphasises good decision-making and safe practice. Participants will learn:

  • How to take a trauma-informed approach to behaviour, recognising how childhood experiences can affect self-regulation.
  • A wide range of de-escalation techniques to prevent situations from escalating.
  • The legal framework around duty of care, reasonable force, and physical intervention.
  • Effective methods for maintaining safety whilst minimising the need for physical intervention
  • How to apply appropriate and safe physical skills to support a child in crisis, when absolutely necessary.

How is it delivered?
The programme is led by trainers certified by School Staff Safety Training, a Quality Award Centre with the Institute of Conflict Management.

Certification
Delegates completing the course will receive an official certificate and a 37-page reference booklet.
