Turn everyday objects into cameras and create your own black-and-white photos — no experience needed!

Discover the origins of photography in this hands-on pinhole camera workshop!

Pinhole photography is one of the simplest — and most magical — ways to create photographic images. In this small-group session, you’ll upcycle an everyday object into a real, working camera, then develop your own black-and-white photographs in a pop-up darkroom.

This workshop invites you to approach image-making differently, slowing down to explore light, time and chance through an analogue process. No prior experience is needed, and all materials are provided.

What We’ll Do

  • Learn the history and basic science behind photography
  • Build a custom pinhole camera from recycled materials (choose from soda cans, film canisters, matchboxes, oatmeal boxes, shoeboxes and more)
  • Load photographic paper and experiment with exposure times
  • Develop your negatives in a safe, pop-up darkroom
  • Share and discuss your results with fellow participants

What’s Included

All materials (recycled objects, photographic paper, chemicals and tools), expert guidance, and your finished camera and prints.

Practical information

  • Children under age 10 must be accompanied by an adult
  • It’s best to wear old clothes — darkroom chemicals can splash!
