Moderated by Andrew J. Eisenberg, Associate Professor and Program Head of Music at NYU Abu Dhabi, the session introduces insights into the cultural meanings and contemporary relevance of the Emirati Harbiyya and the New Zealand Haka, both of which trace their roots to war dances.
Representatives from the Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Centre for Cultural Understanding will speak on the Harbiyya, while Polynesian performers Mare Riki, Jamie Clarke, and Tony Sului will present on the Haka.
Through guided discussion and short demonstrations, audiences will learn how each form has carried ideas of strength, unity, and identity across generations.
