ORCHARD ROAD HERITAGE WALK
Sun, 1st March 2026
9am to 11.30am
We begin the tour with an introduction to the infamous Orchard Towers. From there, we trace the success story of Singapore’s Orchard Road.
If truth be told, almost all of Orchard Road began life just like many other places in Singapore. Agriculture was the keyword. Most of the land was devoted to gambier and nutmeg. But that didn’t take off very well.
Life at Orchard Road only began to change at the turn of the century. By the 1950s, Orchard Road was well on her way to a glamorous lifestyle – thanks to the colonial folks and Peranakans.
Today, Orchard Road glitters. Almost all tourist guides will tell you the beautiful stories. But your ole Uncle Chris will tell you everything! I will tell you the full complete story – from the fairy tale beginning to the drug-laden era of the 1960s – and 70s! And beyond into the modern world of shopping and glitzy world of nightlife.
Most of us love a happy ending, so we will end the tour with some beautiful stories about Orchard Road. This tour will end at what used to be the former car show rooms near Dhoby Ghaut (Oldham Lane). This was where the wealthy came to buy their horses and carriages, before the arrival of motor cars.
Meet me, 9am, 1st March 2026 at Orchard Rendezvous Hotel, 1 Tanglin Road. Singapore 247905.
Note: This tour is a scenic walk where we’ll learn to appreciate the finer landmarks often missed (or omitted) on this glitzy road.
