This 16.8-mile stretch of the Buckeye Trail through the West Union & Shawnee Section of The Buckeye Trail Appalachian Foothills Chapter, is widely considered the crown jewel of Ohio hiking. Moving through the Richard and Lucile Durrell Edge of Appalachia Preserve, you’ll experience a "vertical transition" where the flat Midwest till plains collide with the ancient, unglaciated Appalachian Plateau.
Because this ecosystem was never leveled by glaciers, it serves as a "refuge" for rare species, boasting a concentration of biodiversity second only to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park (GSMNP) in the eastern U.S.
Trip Overview: The Sunshine Corridor
This route is notoriously rugged for Ohio. The "Sunshine Corridor" refers to the high-ridge sections of the trail that break out of the dense canopy into rare limestone cedar barrens and xeric prairies.
