misery meals is here!!! and you, dear one, are oh-so-cordially invited to the launch of this community cookbook for eating when it’s hard. putting together this cookbook with brilliant recipe and artwork submissions from lived-experience qtibpoc folk around the globe has been a real labour of love. we’re talking, blood (well… ketchup maybe), sweat n actual tears.
misery meals is a love letter to the sad stomach, the bloated brain, the soupy soul. we’re celebrating our Crip kin and the wonky, resourceful hacks we’ve found to feed ourselves, from pre-chopped everything and two-minute sauces to remixed tinned food and no-cook cooking.
this is for our siblings recovering from surgery, for the manic and chronically fatigued, the pain-brained and the anti-foodie. this is for all of us! this has been all of us! and there’s no shame in any of it.
come thru on friday 20 march from 6.30-9.30pm at the common press bookshop in bethnal green to pick up your copy of the book, try out some of our fave depression canapés made by mayya papaya from @foodisms.co // @bidchenkitchen or shimmy to aisha’s food-themed playlist. heck, maybe even all three if you’re feeling it.
we’d really love to see you there and share some warmth over this cookbook coming out to the world on a spring eve. c u there, loves <3
it’s freeee to come thru for our book launch but we will need you to register so we can get a handle on the numbers, pls. depression canapés will be served on a first come, first serve basis so come quick ;)
you can also buy your copy to come pick it up at the launch irl so make sure to select the right ticket for you.
we're offering three price points for this book in the hopes that a mutual-aid approach can mean it's accessible for as many people as possible!
- £25 solidarity pricing for those who cannot pay the recommended price (these are capped, so please do not choose this if you can afford a different category)
- £35 this is the recommended price for this book. it covers the cost of printing and the misery teams labour and materials in organising the distribution of the book.
- £45 this is for misery supporters who know that paying it forward is the way forward! this option will allow us to offer this book for free to communities who need it, and to generate some much needed income for the running of misery!
Any profits made by the sale of this book will go towards the continued running of misery CIC.

ON THE EVE
we’ll be hosting an open space with no set agenda other than to gather at the common press bookshop from 6.30-9.30pm, maybe say a few words. unlike other misery events, this launch will not be exclusive to QTIBPOC so we can launch misery meals with our wider community of friends, funders and allies that have supported our work. we’d love any help with packing down the space together so if you can stay on for 10-15 mins afterwards, it’ll be greatly appreciated.
exact location of the common press bookshop is: 118 Bethnal Green Road, London E2 6DG (Gmaps link here)
