Made to be Felt is a tactile experience rooted in radical creation, featuring phenomenal works of fiber crafted by artists of color. This exhibition is meant to challenge the connotation of “fine art” when applied to fiber while also emphasizing the nearness of art. Fiber art exists everywhere, right under our fingertips; and, it's important to note that its accessibility doesn't negate its inherent value. The work on view transforms yet respects the tradition of fiber art through the act of combining foundational techniques with innovative forms and approaches. Made to be Felt displays the ever-expansive abilities of fiber as a medium through unique three-dimensional sculptures and abstract designs.
Historically, marginalized communities have a strong cultural connection to practices with fiber, often using it as a tool for storytelling, cultural liberation, and as a way to reflect and preserve connections to heritage and land. We encourage you to uncover these narratives and explore the various textures through gentle touches. The interactive experience is meant not only to create an emotional attachment with the work, but to allow viewers to truly feel the effort woven into it. Visitors may leave feeling more observant of the fiber art around them and inspired to challenge their perspectives of folk art and crafts as fine art. We believe art is made to be felt, and through this exhibition, we honor the work of the hand and delve into a wildly imaginative, sensory world.
