About Machine Girl

Machine Girl is an American electronic punk band formed in Long Island, New York in 2012 by Matt Stephenson (aka DJ Chaotic Ugly). Initially a solo project, it became a duo in 2015 when percussionist Sean Kelly joined to play live drums, and in 2024 Lucy Caputi joined as a guitarist for their live shows.

The band is renowned for its explosive fusion of breakcore, punk, hardcore, and rave influences, calling their sound “fucked-up electronic punk”. Their style pushes the boundaries between genres, blending unpredictable, high-energy performances with themes on mental health, anti-authoritarianism, and gender identity. Notable works include the original soundtrack for the video game Neon White (2022) and a discography featuring albums like WLFGRL (2014), The Ugly Art (2018), and MG Ultra (2024).

Machine Girl’s name is inspired by the 2008 Japanese film The Machine Girl, whose samples are sometimes used in their music. Stéphenson and Kelly, with Caputi added as guitarist, produce a chaotic, colorful experience both in their records and on stage, challenging conceptions of electronic and punk music.
