Words & Images: A Photobook Workshop

We often assume that writing ennobles, explains, or justifies photography. Yet – as Tim Carpenter notes – “photographs are not in need of repair through text”: they are complete in themselves. Words and images can coexist, but it’s crucial to understand when, why, and how each operates. We must consider the timing, modes, and spaces of both, so neither diminishes the other.

This workshop examines how the relationship between text and images can shape, expand, and transform a photographic project. Through a close look at photobooks where text plays a central narrative role, we will explore the diverse and dynamic ways words and images can dance together. Practical exercises will anchor and expand our discussion.

Participants are encouraged to bring their own photobooks or examples to enrich the conversation.

What you will learn:

1. A sharper view of how text and images can purposefully interact within contemporary visual language

 2. Understanding of different styles of writing and their pertinence to different bodies of work

3. Experimentation with images, words and space to unlock new perspectives
