A community photo workshop

Explore the possibilities of Polaroid through emulsion lifts - a technique that allows you to gently separate the emulsion layer and transfer it to a new surface. In this workshop we will be learning how to layer multiple lifts. No prior photography experience needed and all materials for the workshop will be provided. Feel free to bring Polaroid pictures or cameras you may have or materials you’d like to transfer on. Despite its fragility, Polaroid emulsion is highly malleable and can work on most surfaces including those of rocks, glass, and even sea shells. Slow down, connect, and reimagine the Polaroid image as a delicate, translucent skin.

Led by Los Angeles artist and photographer, Willow Belle, this 4 hour workshop will start with a brief introduction to Polaroid and manipulation techniques. The class will then shoot their Polaroid portraits (2 shots per student, additional film may be purchased) with provided camera options. After the studio shoot, a live step by step demonstration and introduction to the supplies will be held as the Polaroids develop. Students will then create their works, exploring the possibilities between image and surface. This process encourages imperfection as emulsions can tear, wrinkle, and crack. Embrace the unpredictable, allowing water, touch, and time to reshape the image.
