Join us for an exciting book talk with author John Hemming at the beautiful St Mary the Virgin Church, Wingham.
John will be discussing his latest book English Liberator: William Miller and the Independence of Spanish South America and sharing fascinating insights into the life and history of William Miller, a bakers son born in Wingham!
Dr John Hemming has written twenty books, including the prize-winning The Conquest of the Incas, and others about the Amazon environment, indigenous peoples, and the histories of Brazil and Peru. He has led or been on many research expeditions, particularly in Amazonia, and visited forty-five tribal peoples, four of which were at their first contact. He was Director of the Royal Geographical Society for 21 years, during which that venerable society was hugely improved. He also had a successful business career in trade publishing and exhibition organising; and has served on many environmental and social charities.
