Discover birds in one of the very best places for birds in Sussex with identification tips from our expert James Duncan.

Tutor: James Duncan

Rye Harbour Nature Reserve is a wetland wildlife habitat renowned for its magnificent bird life - over 280 species have been recorded. Many breed on the reserve and others are migratory, stopping to refuel during epic journeys of flight. There are many birds to see and hear, but do you know what they are?

Baffled by birds of prey? Flummoxed by finches? Whether you're a beginner or an improver, if you need a walk-through on waders or guidance with your gulls, this is the event for you. We'll begin with a short session on the effective use of binoculars to maximise your viewing experiences.

Then join us for a circular walk of approximately 3km (2 miles) as we visit a few of the bird hides to get excellent views of waders, seabirds, ducks and more. Our expert, James will guide you in observing pattern, colour, posture, shape and size and engaging your senses to listen to their calls or song.

There'll be plenty of opportunities to ask questions as we walk around. Binoculars are highly recommended, though we'll have some pairs available for loan on the day.

Previous attendees of James's courses said:

"James was really enthusiastic, he had so much knowledge he was clearly happy to share with us."

"Superb guide. Imparted knowledge well in an informal way."

James Duncan has led hundreds of walks and courses for Sussex Wildlife Trust and has an encyclopaedic knowledge of natural history and a wealth of fascinating facts to share.
