"Searching for Home" by Anya Vero An Immersive Art Exhibition in RAF Neatishead's Nuclear Bunker 14 November 2025 | Remembrance Week
Your invitation to see the massive Type 84 radar and the Bunker at RAF Neatishead concealed one of the Cold War's most critical secrets. Artist Anya Vero transforms a Cold War nuclear bunker into an extraordinary exploration of belonging, memory, and home. This unprecedented exhibition takes place three stories underground in RAF Neatishead's restored bunker, where art meets military heritage in spaces closed to civilians for decades.
About the Exhibition
"Searching for Home" reflects on what it means to belong in our modern world. Through paintings, installations, and interactive elements, Vero explores the universal human search for connection and place. Her work, informed by her own heritage representing 4 nationalities, asks: What is home? Where do we find it? How do we know when we've arrived?
The exhibition gains profound resonance in this Cold War bunker, where service personnel once stood watch far from their own homes, protecting ours. Vero's paintings dialogue with the concrete walls that once sheltered Norfolk's defenders, while interactive installations invite visitors to consider their own searches for belonging.
The Living Memory Wall Project
Inspired by a fading goodbye discovered during restoration - a serviceman's farewell from 1962 - Vero has created space for veterans and serving personnel to inscribe their own memories directly onto the bunker walls. These contributions become part of the permanent installation, with local schoolchildren creating facing tributes. Two generations connected through art and memory.During restoration of RAF Neatishead's nuclear bunker, we discovered a fading message on abandoned equipment - a serviceman's goodbye from 1962, nearly lost to time. This single voice inspired a unique memorial project: preserving the stories of those who served, written in their own hands, on the walls where they once stood watch.
As well as the free exhibition above. There will be an opportunity for paid bunker tours where you descend into authentic Cold War operations rooms, through massive blast doors that once sealed against nuclear threat. Walk corridors where coded messages determined the nation's response to Soviet aircraft. Stand where Norfolk's defenders tracked objects we hoped would never come.
Veterans and serving personnel are creating a permanent memorial on the bunker walls - their memories, service numbers, and messages preserved for future generations. Local schoolchildren contribute on facing walls, connecting those who served with those they protected.
Progress will be visible on the restoration work of the T84 radar above, the underground chambers echo with history, and for these few days, civilians can access spaces closed since the Cold War ended.
