Personal insights into the Harris' collections - chosen, researched and shared by our wonderful volunteers.

This talk by volunteer Alice Beaty focuses on the linen garments worn by ancient Egyptian rulers, considering how this apparel could depict power in both male and female figures.

By analysing the garments, Alice will build a picture of how the ancient Egyptians chose to be represented in their next life and whether a hierarchy came into play.

You will consider the linen garments worn by gods and kings as shown in imagery and statues on display in The Harris and other museums.

The talk will also include the case study of the female ruler Hatshepsut who has become synonymous with themes of gender fluidity and you’ll consider how her image was essential in her journey to power.

This talk will be free and bookable via Eventbrite please for 10 people. The talk will last between 45 mins – 1 hour.

Attendees should meet Alice outside the Discover Preston Gallery, First Floor.
