Columbia’s official submission to the Academy Awards, La Suprema tells the story of Laureana, a strong-willed teenager who’s not about to conform to what society or her abuela has in store for her. When she finds out that her estranged uncle is days away from fighting in a boxing world championship, she ignites a spark that will quickly get the whole town on board with watching the match live on national television. The problem? It may be the 21st century, but the village has no electricity or a TV set. Spanish with English subtitles, runtime 83 minutes.
The film will be introduced by Dr. Chelsey Dyer, a cultural anthropologist and assistant teaching professor in NC State’s College of Humanities and Social Sciences.
The Global Film Series is a partnership between the NC State University Libraries and the NC State Office of Global Engagement.
