It's October 1986, the community centre wafts with char siu and preserved vegetables, Priscilla Chan resonates throughout the hall as the clunk of shuffling tiles and triumphant victories interject her singing "Do you want to dance tonight?". A projector illuminates the stage with swirling colours that rhythmically move as a table of crafters cut, fold and glue paper lanterns to Letitia Deans "Something out of nothing". Standing by the bar with cups in hand, a group of chatters in high waisted trousers and oversized blazers reminisce the time they scored 13 orphans, as they witness someone tapping their fingers to Ngoc Lans "The Lovers" while waiting for a pair to win. The night grows darker, the coloured lights wash the walls, whispers of karaoke conspire between brave folk as the disco ball begins to rotate and reflect onto the mahjong tiles. Koji Yoshikawas "Candle eyes" music video begins to play on the projector as a few hands place LED lights on all of the tables.
