Film: "Democracy Noir"
Democracy Noir follows three women — opposition politician Timea, journalist Babett, and nurse Nikoletta (Niko) — as they challenge Prime Minister Viktor Orbán’s tightening grip on Hungary. While Orbán’s Fidesz party rewrites rules and consolidates power, the trio documents corruption, mobilizes protest, and tests new ways to defend democratic freedoms. Directed by Oscar-nominee Connie Field, the film shows how institutions have been hollowed out over the past decade, why many still cheer the strongman, and how resistance endures. Hungary’s struggle echoes a broader rise of illiberalism from Turkey and Belarus to the United States — and the determination of citizens fighting to win back their democracy.
