This month - a fantastic double bill....
Fantastic Planet is a 1973 surrealist sci-fi animation directed by Rene Laloux - the first paragraph of its plot summary from wikipedia tells you everything you need to know (apart from the fact that it has a mindblowing soundtrack)
In the distant future, the giant blue humanoid Draags have brought human beings (who are called Oms)from Earth to the planet Ygam, where the Draags maintain a technologically and spiritually advanced society. The Draags consider Oms animals, and while they keep some as pets, others live in the wilderness and are periodically slaughtered by the Draags to control their population Draags have much longer lifespans than Oms, but reproduce much less.
Next up is Fantastic Voyage - this really has the lot! Double agents - miniaturised submarines - one hour before everything goes back to normal size! What once might have been a cosy Saturday afternoon treat as a 12 year old - within the walls of the chapel of Psyche - is revealed to be a real psychedelic classic! Who knew the interior of the human body was exactly the same as the Mathmos from Barbarella!
