ABOUT THE AUTHOR

We are ECSTATIC to announce that we’re bringing Edinburgh’s Poet Laureate , or Makar (the much sexier Scots word that means, poet/bard/ hardcore wordsmith) Michae Pederson to Stoke-on-Trent!

Author of our favourite book of 2026 , Muckle Flugga as well as the non fiction ode to the beauty of male friendship Boyfriends and three (count ā€˜em) prize winning poetry collections.

Michael has recently shared stages with Shirley Manson, Stephen Fry and Ocean Vuong.

ABOUT THE BOOK

At DCB we love books that explore the dark sticky corners of the human mind, books that don’t fit neatly into any genre.

Since reading Muckle Flugga, it is now completely plausible to me that an unexpected zoo animal is living on a Scottish sea stack and that the ghost of Robert Louis Stevenson assists a lonely Lighthouse Keeper’s son.

The book says so much about the role of fathers and how this one, and many others, would rather throw themselves headfirst into a force 9 Gale to pull dead bodies from the ocean than say I Love You to their sons.

I love the book’s ambition, I love the song of the language and I love that it is unapologetically itself. And that itself is really, really weird.

ABOUT OUR EVENTS

Our Author Parties have all the substance you’d expect from a literary event and the atmosphere of a Friday night in your mate’s living room.

Our band new shop, has a tonne more, well, space than our old home! No more sitting on each other’s knees. It’s wheelchair accessible with a ground floor toilet.

We’ll have a paid bar. There'll be time for audience questions and getting your book signed AND we’re staying open afterwards so we can all chat books and make friends.

Even if you’ve never picked up a book in your life you’ll have a good night. Promise.

ACCESSIBILITY INFO:

  • Please get in touch if you have any specific access requirements we can help with.
  • The shop is wheelchair accessible, with a double wide front door.
  • This event will involve sitting on a chair, with comfort breaks whenever you need them. We encourage standing up and stretching, fidgeting, wiggling around, this isn't school, humans need to move.
  • The toilets are on the same floor as the venue and are gender neutral .
  • There will be amplified sound at low levels.
  • Get in touch by emailing hello@dropcitybooks.com
