A hands-on workshop exploring DJ skills, music culture and creative listening across vinyl, digital and controller setups.

What the day includes

Participants take part in a structured programme made up of six activity stations, including:

  • The history of DJing
How DJ culture developed, where it comes from, and how it connects to different music scenes and communities.
  • What DJs actually do
Understanding the role of a DJ beyond mixing — reading a room, selecting music, building energy and telling a story through sound.
  • Vinyl turntables
Introduction to records, turntables and basic handling, including cueing and beat awareness.
  • USB / digital DJ systems
Learning how modern DJ setups work, including digital libraries and basic mixing concepts.
  • Controllers & hybrid setups
Exploring controller-based DJing and how different technologies are used in practice.
  • Listening & awareness skills
Developing musical awareness, timing, phrasing and creative listening — skills that apply beyond DJing.

The day is designed to be hands-on, supportive and exploratory, with participants encouraged to try things out rather than aim for perfection.

Q&A with a professional DJ

The workshop includes a dedicated question-and-answer session with an experienced professional DJ. This gives participants the chance to ask about:

  • real-life DJ pathways
  • practice and progression
  • equipment choices
  • confidence and creativity
  • how DJ skills connect to wider music and creative industries

Who it’s for

  • Teenagers and adults
  • Complete beginners or those with a casual interest in DJing
  • Young people exploring music and creative pathways
  • Adults curious about DJ culture and music skills

No prior experience is needed. All equipment is provided.

Why this workshop matters
