A practical course using best practice to improve your assessment toolbox and rehabilitation skills to navigate complex calf injuries

Join Dr Colin Griffin at Sheffield United FC’s training ground for an evening, hands-on masterclass in calf muscle strain assessment and rehab – timed to fit around busy clinic and team schedules.

Calf strains are among the most burdensome injuries in field sports and athletics, with soleus aponeurosis injuries driving long time‑loss and high re‑injury rates. This course digs under the surface of “simple calf strains” – from the mismatch between rapid neural gains and slow tendon/aponeurotic remodelling, to the challenges of return‑to‑running decisions under high calf load.

You’ll blend evidence‑based theory with practical gym-based and clinic applications, including:

  • The complex, variable anatomy of the calf complex and its mechanical demands in sport
  • Assessment of calf capacity: isokinetic/isometric strength, explosive & reactive strength, and running gait profiling, plus key clinical tests
  • Using EMG, force plates and in vivo ultrasound to assess calf function and guide rehab progress
  • Exercise prescription targeting neural drive, muscle architecture, tendon adaptation, and progressive plyometric and running capacity

By the end, you’ll leave with a clear, test‑driven framework to assess, load and return your athletes with greater confidence and fewer setbacks.
