Read The Creative Act: A Way of Being by Rick Rubin with us at The Local Art Gallery. No creative experience necessary! All welcome!

Get inspired and learn about the creative process through this book club, facilitated by Lois Barber. Participants will read and discuss “The Creative Act: A Way of Being” by Rick Rubin. Open to everyone, no experience with making art is required! Meets Mondays 1/12, 1/ 19, 1/ 26, & 2/2 from 10:30 am – 12pm.

$75, does not include the book. Participants are responsible for purchasing the book and reading to page 103 for the first meeting.


Details: Lois Barber will guide discussions aimed to spark your creativity, rekindle your creative energy, and apply what you learn in this book to your own life. We will read and discuss approximately 100 pages for each of our 4 group discussions. Topics will include: Open yourself to creative inspiration; Monitor the inflow; Feel the fear and do it anyway; Lower the stakes and have some fun; Craft your ideas into reality; What is ‘art’ and why do we make it?

About the author: Rick Rubin is a nine-time GRAMMY-winning producer, named one of the 100 most influential people in the world by Time and the most successful producer in any genre by Rolling Stone. He has collaborated with artists from Tom Petty to Adele, Johnny Cash to the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Beastie Boys to Slayer, Kanye West to the Strokes, and System of a Down to Jay-Z.

Lois Barber, the discussion leader, is an experienced watercolor painter and former art teacher. Her master’s degree is on the Development of Creativity. She has studied and practiced mindfulness for 34 years. Thich Nhat Hanh (pronounced Tick Not Hon), Vietnamese Buddhist monk, has been her primary teacher. Rubin often refers to his teachings in this book. Mostly Lois has fun painting Plein Air (outside) capturing the beauty of the world, and has created and painted hundreds of whimsical birdz that you can view on her website: https://birdz.gallery/
