Join us for the FIRST! Installment of the Bolinas Bluegrass & Old Time Jam at Smiley's Saloon, hosted by Spencer Krenz!
We are joined by are incredibly talented house band:
Guitarist, mandolinist, and vocalist Scott Gates has been a force in the California bluegrass world since childhood. A core member of AJ Lee & Blue Summit, his flat-picking and harmony work have shaped the band’s sound on stages across the U.S. and Europe. Scott has performed alongside players like David Grisman, Mike Marshall, and Chris Thile, blending deep traditional grounding with a modern, inventive touch.
Flat-picking guitarist Ian Ly is known for his dynamic work with Crying Uncle Bluegrass Band, bringing precision, tone, and drive well beyond his years. A 2023 National Flatpick Guitar Champion, his style draws on Tony Rice and Doc Watson while adding a clean, contemporary edge. Ian has toured internationally with Crying Uncle and appeared at major festivals across the country.
Upright bassist Zach Sharpe is the low-end engine behind Yoseff Tucker & The Bow Ties and several other California projects. Raised by bluegrass pickers in the backwoods of Indiana, he brings a deep, driving groove and solid time to every band he anchors. Now based in the Bay Area, Zach has held down the bass for groups like Front Country, Supermule, and Jeff Scroggins & The Scroggdogs, appearing at major festivals including RockyGrass and Telluride.
Banjo player Tyler Stegall, based in San Francisco, performs with groups including Charlie Torch and High Water Line. His playing is both versatile and rooted, blending a traditional bluegrass foundation with a personal touch that stands out in the Bay Area scene. Tyler’s drive, timing, and musicality have made him one of the region’s premier young banjo players.
This is a FREE community oriented event. To help keep this thing going though, we need some support from people that are able. We will have a suggested donation Jar & Venmo at the from $10-30 sliding scale or however much you feel.
There will also be a tip jar for the musicians.
You are not obligated to, but the support will keep Smiley’s and the musicians able to keep coming back.
