The Hate U Give follows Starr Carter, a 16-year-old Black girl who lives in a poor, mostly Black neighbourhood but attends an affluent, mostly white private school. Her life changes when she witnesses the fatal police shooting of her unarmed childhood friend, Khalil.

As media attention and public outrage grow, Starr struggles to find her voice amid pressure from her community, fear of retaliation, and the expectations of her friends at school. Torn between two worlds, she ultimately decides to speak out for justice, confronting systemic racism, police brutality, and the silencing of Black youth.

The novel explores themes of identity, courage, racial inequality, and activism, offering a powerful portrayal of how personal loss can lead to social awakening.
