Lord Beith will present an overview of the men and women who have represented Berwick-upon-Tweed in Westminster

This lecture by Lord Beith, looks at some of the men and women who have represented our constituency at Westminster. It is organised in association with Berwick History Society. Tickets for BHS members are free.

Berwick has been represented by some notable people over the years. Among them are:

Sir Edward Grey, who became Foreign Secretary in 1905, and is famous for his remark on the eve of the First World War "The lights are going out all over Europe",

Sir William Beveridge, whose 1942 report laid the groundwork for the NHS and the welfare state,

Mabel Phillipson, elected in 1923 and only the third woman to sit at Westminster

Elected for Berwick-upon-Tweed in a 1973 by-election and stepping down in 2015, Alan Beith holds the record as the longest-serving Liberal MP since David Lloyd George. He is a former chief whip of the Liberal Party and a former deputy leader of the Liberal Party and the Liberal Democrats. In 1988 he stood unsuccessfully against Paddy Ashdown for leadership of the party. He was knighted in the Queen's Birthday Honours in 2008 and elevated as a life peer in 2015.

Tea and coffee will be served, and all are welcome. There is no need to print out and bring your ticket, as we will have a record of your booking.
