Beach Road was once part of the upmarket European Town. If you were an Asian working class, you won’t be here. You could be anywhere in Chinatown, Kampong Glam, Little India, or elsewhere.
Beach Road was part of Raffles Town Plan (where demographics were carefully mapped out according to your ethnic). The beach came all the way to the road. Only the rich and wealthy could afford these luxurious homes. There were just 20 of them.
Today, Beach Road is a far cry from what it used to be. There is nothing here to remind you the beach was once lapping at your corridor. Singapore’s first few cinemas sprouted up here.
Being at the beach front, life here was very different from that at Singapore River. Today, we’ll take a scenic walk along the former beach front. We’ll trace our history from the time our forefathers landed to current days.
Contrary to what many think, there are a lot more to rediscover if you peer in between the nooks and crevices. I invite you to come take a walk with me through this former European Town.
We meet at 9am, City Hall MRT. Upon alighting, take EXIT B, go up the escalator, and meet me in front of PARIS BAGUETTE. Depending on our fitness and/or stamina, we can end this tour at either Golden Mile or Crawford Street. We’ll decide when we meet on the 3rd Jan 2026, 9am.
