
Sahana Balasubramanya will present Apaam Swarupam – The Form of Water, a Bharatanatyam margam consisting of five pieces, based on the major rivers of North and South India - Ganga, Yamuna, Tungabhadra and Kaveri. She incorporates Hindu mythology, symbolism, regional cultures, languages and geography to tell these stories that highlight the environmental and cultural significance of these rivers and the threat they face. The performance is a reminder to the global society of the need to engage with conservation and preservation efforts. This production has been staged at various venues in India, the USA and Europe.
Sahana Balasubramanya is a promising young dancer, trained at Ganesa Natyalaya, Delhi, under renowned Guru Padmabhushan Saroja Vaidyanathan in the Tanjavur style of Bharatanatyam. She has received advanced training from renowned Bharatanatyam dancers Rama Vaidyanathan and Anuradha Venkataraman. An empanelled solo artist with the Indian Counsil for Cultural Relations (ICCR), Sahana Balasubramanya has won many awards and scholarships. She has performed widely in India and abroad to critical acclaim since 2005 and was the lead dancer for the Bharatanatyam segment in the opening ceremony of the Commonwealth Games held at Delhi in 2010. Formerly a senior dance faculty member at Ganesa Natyalaya, she also served as the instructor (2014- 2018) for Bharatanatyam at the Vanderbilt Dance Program. She received her PhD in mathematics from Vanderbilt University in 2018 and is, currently, Assistant Professor of Mathematics at Lafayette College, United States.
