The Many Lives of Stewart Johnson Screening

Birmingham's preeminent pedal steel guitar player reflects on his life in music, connection to his craft and the legacy he leaves his family. This short documentary is an exploration of the life of a unique creative soul and an esoteric touring musician. With live music and the venues that support it in decline, Stew’s unique character and independent lifestyle seem like ghosts from a distant past. A true Brummie legend.

Stew is continuing his musical journey in earnest and is not about to stop now. His latest project is a collaboration with Birmingham songwriter Dan Finnemore (Swampmeat Family Band, Low Cut Connie) and their new LP Find a Love That Brings You Home is released in August on Gulf Coast Records.

This screening will be hosted by Birmingham Music Archivist Jez Collins and include a Q&A with Stewart himself and the film’s director Jez Alsop. Stew and Dan will also perform some tracks from the new record and DJs will play the best in Country, folk and blues into the wee hours. Tickets for the event are limited and all proceeds will go towards the film’s festival run in 2026.
