Hello!
After Rachel Kushner's Creation Lake scored 7 out of a possible 10 at November's South London Book Club, in January we will be going for The Line of Beauty by Alan Hollinghurst.
This meeting will run at the usual time and place of 7pm on the evening of Tuesday, January 6th, at the Roundhouse, Wandsworth.
Of the book, publisher Pan MacMillan says:Winner of the Man Booker Prize, The Line of Beauty is a classic novel about class, politics and sexuality in Margaret Thatcher’s 1980s Britain.
In the summer of 1983, twenty-year-old Nick Guest moves into an attic room in the Notting Hill home of the wealthy Feddens: Gerald, an ambitious Tory MP, his wife Rachel and their children Toby and Catherine.
Innocent of politics and money, Nick is swept up into the Feddens’ world and an era of endless possibility, all the while pursuing his own private obsession with beauty.
The Line of Beauty (ISBN-10 1529077206) is 528 pages in length. A copy can be bought new for £9.99. A used copy can be acquired for around £4 (all-in).
As a Booker Prize winner, the book is certain to be kept in your local library network.
Key info:
• all are welcome
• please make sure you've done your best to read the book before joining us!
• please bring a suggestion for our next read
We will likely be a group of eight. If you are new to the Group, just come along and don't be apprehensive. We were all first timers once.
You don't need to bring the book but make sure you have read it and bring your opinions! If you are attending for the first time, we will likely all be in the far corner of the pub. Imagine that you are standing in front of the long bit of the bar, go left, up the steps and we will try to be sitting in the top left-land corner of the pub.
If you cannot make it, please adjust your RSVP, it helps us to organise seating.
We will have a piece of A4 on our table displaying The Line of Beauty. Do bring an idea of what book we put in the schedule next.
Here's to a great time discussing The Line of Beauty, 7pm at The Roundhouse.
Best wishes,
Emily & The South London Book Club
