This workshop will introduce you to the hand-sewing techniques and skills required to create your own authentic sashiko designs.

Many cultures have their own unique way of decorating or repairing textiles, Sashiko Embroidery is one such technique originating from Japan. It uses a running stitch to breathe new life into clothing/textiles as part of a simple and mindful practice.

This workshop will introduce you to the hand-sewing techniques and skills required to create your own authentic sashiko designs. Whether you’re repairing a well-loved piece or adding decorative stitches to refresh it, you’ll discover how to sashiko with intention and style.

All materials and equipment are provided. Just bring one or two garments you’d like to mend or embellish —denim works especially well with sashiko, as the technique was originally developed on indigo-dyed fabrics.

Your tutor, Dianne Spottiswood Miller is a fashion/textile designer & educator with significant experience of working in the creative sector, higher education and internationally. She works with Edinburgh Remakery, teaching creative textile mending skills and helping communities build the confidence to challenge fast fashion—one stitch at a time!
